ApPEELing Banner Ads

Let’s face it. Nobody really like banner ads except for advertisers and those who display them to earn extra money. You can tell that the average online users don’t like them since a click-through-rate of even 2% or 3% is considered effective. It seems like online advertisement will never be a win-win situation that can satisfy both Internet users and advertisers…or will it?

Many of you probably saw Peel-Away Ads before while surfing the Internet. This is a type of online advertisement enabled by Flash that appears as a peelable page usually on the top right corner of a website. Once you place your mouse over the peel, then the peel will expand to reveal an advertisement.

There are many benefits to using Peel-Away Ads which could likely make it the newest trend of online advertisement. Firstly, Peel-Away Ads are non-intrusive unlike other online ads. In fact, Internet users won’t be able to see or even know what type of ad will be revealed before placing their mouse over the ad. Won’t this reduce the exposure and click-through-rate of the ad? Maybe, but probably not. The reason is simple; it is our innate human curiousity that makes us actually want to view the ad. There is something special about human beings that makes us want what we don’t have, so in this case, we feel aroused to see what is hidden. Also, the viewers can be certain that the ad will be very dynamic and visually appealing unlike the standard text banners found all over the Internet.
