Netbooks Uprising

Size does matter when it comes to laptops. Bigger laptops can be equipped with advanced computing components, but that may not be what consumers want. Smaller laptops have their benefits too.

The new trend in the computing industry is the Netbook. Netbooks are a perfect choice for consumers needing a laptop that is portable, inexpensive, and easy to use. It is expected that there will be approximately 50 million Netbooks used around the world by the year 2011.

While the concept of this mini-laptop sounds good, the current models available in the marketplace is far from perfection. In fact, none of the key features of the Netbook is being applied to the Netbooks put on shelf today. They are highly critized for its low performance, high price tag, and its short battery lifespan. So here is a list of my own suggestions on how Netbooks should be built:

* Although low performance should be expected since Netbooks are built with basic functionalities, the emphasis should be on SPEED. The operation system loading time has to be quick, and users must be able to launch several software at the same time without experiencing lag.
* Existing Netbooks only have a battery life of about 2-3 hours. This needs to be increased to a minimum of 4 hours for basic use.
* Perhaps the only feature they got right is the light weight of Netbooks. However, manufacturers must also consider the risk of damage that could be done to the hardware if the Netbook drops to the ground, which can likely happen due to its light weight.
