Let’s take a look at the historical development of mass media. This is a chronically ordered list of the seven mass media, or as I like to call it, The Seven Great Wonders of Mass Media:
1) Print Publication
2) Recordings
3) Cinema
4) Radio
5) Television
6) Internet
7) Mobile phones
The last two on the list, Internet and Mobile phones, are what marketers call digital media. Their prominent importance as indispensable tools for business and personal use are the sole contribution to spurring today’s society as the digital era or digital age. This should not come as a surprise though. If you take a look at the list above, the Internet and Mobile phones are substitutes which replace the first five mass media on the list. In fact, these digital mass media channels are able to revolutionize the older generations of mass media. For example, recordings can now be in the form of podcast. Television shows can now be downloaded or streamed for online viewing either on a computer or mobile phone. Print publication are now available in formatted documents such as PDF files which can then be widespread on a large scale.
