QR Codes contain short pieces of information that are encrypted into a 2D matrix barcode which can then be deciphered using barcode readers or smartphones. I have talked about the QR Code in a previous post, but are they even popular or effective?

QR Codes are often seen on print advertisements and magazines, but are consumers taking the initiative to pull out their phone to scan the barcode? I see QR codes on advertisements displayed in subway trains and buses, but I have never seen anyone scan the barcodes before.

It could be reasonable to argue that QR Codes are more popular in Japan considering that is the technology originated from that country. However, with an increasing number of consumers using smartphones, this technology could still be at its early stage of integration with advertising and promotions.

The following video shows an excellent campaign for the New York City’s Central Park which integrated the QR Code technology successfully to create a new and interactive experience for visits.
