Last week, I came across a brilliant video on the Internet presented by Pranav Mistry at TED on the potential of a seamless integration between virtual reality and reality (aka The Sixth Sense). The idea is for the user to wear a portable computer system that can project onto any surface to create an interactive display screen.

For example, you can project a telephone touchpad onto your palm and use your other hand to dial the projected numbers to call a friend. Or you can project onto a plane ticket and it will display onto the ticket all of the flight’s updated information.

The potential of this technology is limitless. While most innovative technologies are developed to achieve ‘convergence’ by packing more functionality onto a single product and the product will always be faster, smaller, and lighter with each product life cycle. What is truly magnificent with this ‘interactive projector’ concept is that it redefines the definition of convergence by seamlessly integrating virtual reality with reality in order to bring the best of both worlds together.
